Platinum blonde hair is such a fun and dramatic way to make a statement, but do you know all the steps you have to put into maintaining it? Unless you’re an experienced blondie like moi, you may not! Platinum blonde hair is one of the hardest shades to perfect and maintain, which is why I’ve come up with a list of my favorite products for maintaining my white locks. Keep reading to find out exactly what I use to keep the brass at bay in between salon visits!
The Best of the Best
This stuff is the ultimate shampoo for keeping the brass at bay between dye jobs! Its super violet hue works phenomenally at toning the yellow out of your blonde hair and keeping it nice and bright. With that being said, I’ve found that it sometimes works a little too well. Be sure to dilute Joico’s shampoo with your favorite nourishing shampoo or alternate every other wash! Pick it up during Ulta’s Big Bottle sale and you’ll be set for the rest of the year! In the meantime, here’s a link to purchase the normal size.
Olaplex is the hottest craze in the beauty world right now, so if you haven’t heard of its magical powers by now, you’re in for a real treat! This product works in three steps, two of which are done by your stylist and the other is for you to do at home. Have a chat with your colorist about whether it’s something they can add to your treatment.
But regardless, the at home step is a must for any color treated hair, not just blondes! You apply it for damp hair, leave it in for 15 minutes, and then wash it out in the shower. It’s the easiest and most effective way to strengthen, protect, and repair your hair. Use it once a week for soft, sleek tresses! Buy it here!
This is honestly the gem in my arsenal! Beauty Protector’s Protect and Detangle spray is the holy grail of styling products! It protects from heat and UV rays, it “safeguards color,” and makes your hair so shiny and healthy! Not to mention, it actually works as a detangler! Pack it away in your pool bag, you’ll thank me later! (Oh, and it smells like cinnamon rolls!) It’s a Birchbox exclusive so you can buy it here for the best price!
What to Leave on the Shelf:
Lush’s DaddyOO Violet Shampoo
Oh my, I really wanted to love this product (and all of lush’s product, to be honest) but I just couldn’t. The smell was so potent, and I went back and forth with it, but even on days where I was okay with it, a gentle breeze could blow into your friends/clients/mother’s face and just not jive. So, that’s a big no for me.
I also felt that it was super drying and, as someone who bleaches her hair every 5 weeks, there is no room for lost moisture. But on top of all of that, I didn’t feel like it did a whole lot to tone my hair. I even left it on a little longer one day and it gave my hair a weird, streaky, and unflattering violet tone. And it’s expensive for not very much product! So, overall, it was a very big no from me. Here’s the link for you to check out yourself!
This was one of those Big Bottle Sale pickups that I got just because it was one of the only options in terms of purple toning. But it was a big disappointment.
The pumps wouldn’t fit on it, which is an annoyance, but it goes into my overall view of it. More importantly, the shampoo did very little to tone my hair, as it was a light lavender color. And even with the matching conditioner, my hair felt very dry and brittle. I personally wouldn’t buy it again even if it was the only purple shampoo on the market.
Okay, this one may not deserve its place on this list, but it’s definitely not one of my top picks. Kenra’s Brightening Conditioner is really good at adding moisture to your hair and repairing it for my the drying effects that nearly every purple shampoo has. However, that’s about it for the good. The lavender aspect (which sells the product, in my opinion) does absolutely nothing to tone your hair. This isn’t much of a surprise because you can clearly see before buying it that the purple tone of the conditioner is just not enough to really tone the gold out of your hair. With that being said, if it’s on sale for a good price, go for it! Just don’t be expecting a miracle from it 😊
Samples I’m Crushing On
I am officially obsessed with everything Drybar! I ran into Ulta one day for this Drybar Prep Rally Primer and Detangler because I needed a new heat protectant quick. And let me tell you, this stuff is AMAZING! My hair is so hard to brush out when it’s wet, but after a couple spritz’ of this, my brush glides right through! I’ve also noticed that my hair feel healthier since I started using it!
Don’t make me choose between this product and the Beauty Protector Prep and Protect because both of them are so great! They both make my hair significantly easier to brush, they both offer heat protection, and they are both a little pricey. The biggest difference that I have noticed is the consistency of the products and the smell. Drybar’s detangler is a true liquid with a slightly minty scent that leaves you nice and refreshed. Beauty Protector’s product is a sprayable cream that legit smells like cinnamon buns. AKA cozy on yo head!
Since I spent a certain amount on Drybar products during that purchase, I received a free sample of their Dry Shampoo and Triple Sec. I’m a convert. I’ll never use another dry shampoo again! I’ve never had much luck with dry shampoo; I hate the powder-y residue that it leaves on your scalp and hands, plus my hair doesn’t get super greasy (probably from the beaching #oops). But the Drybar dry shampoo is so different! My bangs do get greasier than the rest of my hair and I have used every last bit of this sample! It’s lightweight and I think it leaves my hair feeling silkier than before!
Because I naturally have dry hair with lots of texture, I don’t really have much of a need for the Triple Sec spray. However, I used it on my friend (who has super straight, silky hair) before curling her hair and it made ALL the difference! If you’re someone who needs a little added texture for curling or braids, definitely give this product a try!
Last but not least, I received this MoroccanOil sample from Sephora a few weeks ago. Just a teeny tiny drop goes a long way to giving you soft, smooth locks all day! I seriously think I can make this little sample go for a couple months before having to buy the full size!
