So, you’re planning a trip to Paris, eh? Paris is known for being many things, but the fashion capital of the world is probably the most prominent. Naturally, you’re stressing about what to wear in order to fit in, be comfy, and look super cute for the ‘gram! Well today, I am here to calm your fears and help you pack for a successful, insta worthy trip!
Get In the French Mindset
First things first, you have to start thinking like a Parisian! The French have mastered the “cool girl” style by following one simple rule: only one “pop” for your look.
You see, the French love a subdued, neutral background for their outfits. They practically invented the basic wardrobe! One of the quickest ways to stand out as a tourist is by wearing a heavily saturated palette and by mixing too many patterns.
Take this look, for example:
See how the majority of my outfit is dark and neutral? My “pop” was the light pink color in my accessories. This method of styling is the epitome of French fashion. You see it all the time, especially with the color red!
Take a Good Look at Your Wardrobe
I know, it’s tempting to book your flight and then immediately head to the mall to upgrade your wardrobe, but you don’t have to! Remember how I said the French are all about basics? Yea, that’s a good thing! It means that there is no way that you are unable to make at least 5 “Parisian” looking outfits with what you have!
Here’s my list of super French pieces that you probably already have in your closet:
- Little Black Dress
- Your favorite wash of jeans
- Simple striped shirt
- Black blouse
- Jean jacket
- Neutral skirt (black, khaki, white…)
- Sneakers (Vans, Converse, street-style Nike’s)
There are endless possibilities with just this list alone! I know that these suggestions may not sound super fun or fashion-forward, but on to my next point!
Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize!
It’s true, the French love simplicity, but they love a good pop of style more! Their favorite way to incorporate their personal style? You guessed it! Accessories!
If you’re headed to Paris in the winter, you’ll see this portrayed mostly in scarves. The French love a big, face-swallowing scarf! As they transition into spring, their focus moves to hats and neck scarves. The summer? Purses and shoes!
But the way that you accessorize an outfit is your chance to put your own personal spin on an otherwise bland color palette. How you decide to pop is your choice!
The hardest piece to pack will be your shoes. I promise you, you’re going to go through an existential life crisis when you have the perfect outfits planned but realize that you have to walk around Paris in those super cute but totally uncomfortable flats that you’ve picked out.
I have your solution!
- One pair of comfortable, yet cute sneakers
- A pair of your most comfortable sandals/booties
- One pair of your cutest shoes
Here’s my logic:
The sneakers should be for days that you need to protect your feet (from rain) or when you need to give your feet a break. The French, for the most part, don’t wear workout tennis shoes, but they love a good stylish sneaker! Pair them with jeans, leggings, a sundress, palazzo pants, or just about anything! If you’re like me and just haven’t found that perfect pair of sneakers, try finding a simple pair of Toms!
At least one nice dinner should be a part of everyone’s Paris itinerary, in my opinion! So, pack a pair of fun shoes for this occasion!! You know, those ones that you bought two months ago thinking “I’ll have a need for these someday.” Give yourself a reason to take those bad boys for a spin in the fashion capital of the world! Instagram will love them!
Going in the spring/summer?
I love sandals, you should love sandals. You know why? They keep your toes cool and dry while you’re walking around muggy Paris all day! Find your most comfortable pair of sandals and add to your suitcase! Pro Tip: pack sandals that have a lot of support! The uneven cobblestone streets can take a toll on your arches and those flat gladiators may not be your favorite at the end of the day!
Going in the fall/winter?
A good pair of booties are a staple in every French girl’s wardrobe! These can be anything from combat boots to heeled booties! Booties offer you a way to look cute but keep your feet nice and protected from the cold. Pair them with jeans, tights and a dress, or leggings!
Now, was that so hard? Not at all! You’re ready to slay the streets of Paris and be comfy doing it! Did you find this post helpful? If so, let me know in the comments below!
